In 2009, she moved into Chicago, Illinois, to study the art of performing in The Second City Training Center. Tolman was first seen on Fargo, a black-comedy crime-drama on FX. Fargo is an original 1996 Coen Brothers film, starred Billy Bob Thornton (as Molly Solverson), Martin Freeman (as Bob Odenkirk) and Bob Odenkirk. Tolman received praise for her performance as Minnesota Police Officer Molly Solverson, with Vanity Fair noting that she "calmly and certainly stole the entire show". Tolman was awarded the Critics' Choice Television Award for her performance in the category Best Supporting Actress in Movies/Miniseries. Additionally, her nominations for Best Actress were received at the Emmy Awards as well as the Golden Globes. Tolman got a two episode guest role as romance novelist Abby Berman on The Mindy Show the following year. In 2015, she was a supporting part of Michael Dougherty s comedy horror movie Krampus. Following her breakout role in Fargo, Tolman declined several part-time roles, including mothers, wives and best friends seeking some more unique roles. Tolman was cast on ABC's Downward Dog based off the Animal Media Group webseries. The show lasted for one year. In addition, she starred on the ABC drama series Emergence, which premiered on September 24, 2019 but was pulled after one season in May 21st in 2020.
